Maybe you're coming from the Town Center Park or Hull Middle School side of Suwanee, and you've started noticing things about your child's smile. It could be crowding, open-mouth breathing while they sleep, or a bite that doesn't seem to fit quite right. You know the American Association of Orthodontists recommends a check-up around age seven, but taking that next step feels like opening a door to a process you don't fully understand yet.
That uncertainty is what keeps many parents from scheduling an evaluation. Will they recommend braces for a 7-year-old? Will they say everything looks fine and send us home? Will there be X-rays, scans, or anything uncomfortable? You just want a clear, honest answer about what’s happening with your child’s growth and what, if anything, needs to be done.
Here’s what happens at your child's first visit to iCare Orthodontics in Norcross. We want to take the guesswork out of the process before you even walk in the door. Our office is on Indian Trail Lilburn Rd, right by Greater Atlanta Christian School (GAC), and the drive is usually straightforward for Suwanee families via I-85, depending on traffic around Jimmy Carter and Duluth.
Your Child's First iCare Visit: A Step-by-Step Walkthrough
Arrival and Welcome
When you arrive, our front desk team will get you settled in comfortably. We don't run a high-volume, in-and-out operation. Our goal is to keep the visit calm, organized, and respectful of your time and your child’s comfort. The space is designed to feel welcoming, not clinical. For families with tricky school or activity schedules, we offer morning slots as early as 7 AM on Wednesdays and Thursdays, plus Saturday appointments from 9 AM to 2 PM.
The Digital Scan
One of the first things we’ll do is take a digital scan of your child's teeth and jaw. We use an iTero intraoral scanner, which means there are no traditional putty impressions or goopy trays. A team member simply passes a small, camera-tipped wand over the teeth for a few minutes. As they do, a complete, precise 3D digital model of your child's mouth appears on-screen in real time. Kids typically find this interesting, not uncomfortable. It’s about as intimidating as an electric toothbrush.
The On-Screen Review
Dr. Kim will pull up the 3D scan on a large screen so you can see exactly what she’s seeing. This is a conversation, not a lecture. If there's a narrow palate that could affect breathing, you'll see it. If the bite is shifting because of how the teeth are erupting, you'll see it. If growth looks normal for your child's age, you'll see that too. We explain what each finding means for your child’s development in plain language, not clinical shorthand. Dr. Kim takes the time to answer every question, and if she wants another orthodontic perspective, she may consult with Dr. Vinh for additional guidance. Our goal is for you to leave this part of the visit understanding what we found and whether treatment is actually needed right now.
The Honest Answer
Here's the part that surprises most parents: the answer is often "not yet." Many children who come in for an early orthodontic evaluation do not need Phase 1 treatment right away. If that's the case for your child, Dr. Kim will tell you that clearly and directly. Your child will then enter our complimentary monitoring program, where we’ll check in every six months, at no cost, to watch their growth and make sure we don't miss the ideal window for treatment, should it become necessary. When treatment is recommended, you'll leave with a clear plan, a 3D visualization, an expected timeline, and a full cost breakdown before you ever have to make a decision.
The Financial Conversation
We believe in full transparency, especially when it comes to cost. No treatment is ever recommended without a complete, clear financial picture first. If you provide your plan details ahead of time, we’ll handle the insurance verification before you even arrive. We’ll walk you through our financing options, which include Cherry 0% interest financing for qualified patients, CareCredit, and our own in-office, interest-free payment plan. We don't spring financial surprises. You'll know exactly what you're signing up for before you sign anything.
What Phase 1 Treatment Actually Involves
If Dr. Kim does recommend early treatment, it's important to know what that really means. Phase 1 isn’t about creating a perfect smile with a full set of braces. It's about guiding jaw growth, making space for permanent teeth, and addressing functional issues that can become more complex later.
Most Phase 1 treatment at iCare centers on one of a few key appliances:
- Palatal Expander: This is the most common Phase 1 appliance. It gently widens the upper jaw to create the space adult teeth need and can help improve airway width for better breathing.
- Space Maintainers: These are used to hold space after a baby tooth is lost early, making sure the permanent tooth has a clear path to erupt in the right position.
- Habit Appliances: These help address habits like thumb-sucking or tongue-thrusting that can narrow the dental arch and push teeth forward.
- Functional Appliances: These are designed to guide jaw position during growth when a significant underbite or overbite is developing.
Phase 1 treatment typically lasts about 9 to 12 months. After that, your child enters a "rest phase" while their remaining permanent teeth come in, and we continue to monitor their progress at no charge. Appointments during Phase 1 are infrequent, usually every 6 to 10 weeks, making it manageable for busy families.
Phase 2, The Bigger Picture
Phase 1 creates a healthy foundation. Phase 2 is where we build the final, beautiful smile on that foundation. After the active part of Phase 1 is complete, there’s typically a rest period of 12 to 18 months while we wait for the remaining permanent teeth to erupt. We monitor your child's progress during this time.
Phase 2 usually begins when enough permanent teeth are present, typically between ages 11 and 14. Because Phase 1 already handled the heavy lifting, like correcting jaw width and bite issues, Phase 2 treatment for our Phase 1 patients is often shorter and simpler. Many cases run just 12 to 18 months instead of the 24 to 30 months that might be needed without early intervention.
For Phase 2, we offer several options, including KLOwen SL custom digital metal braces, LightForce custom ceramic braces, and Invisalign. We use the same custom digital planning approach for Phase 2 as we do for Phase 1, so there are no stock brackets or average-fit assumptions.
Fitting It Into a Suwanee School Schedule
We know that pulling a child out of class at Hull Middle School or other Gwinnett schools isn’t always easy. That's why we’ve built our schedule to work for busy families. iCare offers early morning appointments starting at 7 AM on Wednesdays and Thursdays, allowing many students to get to school before the first bell. We also have Saturday hours from 9 AM to 2 PM. Because Phase 1 visits are infrequent by design, most families only need to come in every 6 to 10 weeks after the initial appointments.
Why Some Suwanee Families Choose iCare in Norcross
There may be orthodontists closer to Suwanee. Some families still make the drive to Norcross because they're looking for a specific kind of early orthodontic evaluation: one that is conservative, growth-focused, fully digital, and explained clearly. Dr. Jamie Kim is a board-certified orthodontist, bringing decades of combined experience to their patients.
Using tools like iTero scanning and digital treatment planning, we can make complex findings easy for parents to see and understand. This approach is a good fit for many families already traveling from Suwanee toward Duluth, PIB, or I-85 for work or school. It’s a natural stop for independent school families already traveling down PIB, and it works for anyone whose daily routine takes them toward the Norcross and Peachtree Corners area.
